BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: Sandrock House & This Wild House

#

Sandrock House & This Wild House come together in West Street, Dorking

How do you describe your business?

Sandrock House is an independent interiors, antiques, and homewares concept store on Dorking’s historic West Street. We’re proud of our thoughtfully curated collection of antique and vintage furniture, contemporary and one-off pieces. Our style is an eclectic mix of old and new, with touches of pared-back Scandi style coupled with industrial grit and glamour.

We’re self-confessed interior styling obsessives and our considered collection of statement lighting, mirrors, seating, storage, and decorative pieces reflects our passion for the unique and the inspiring.

Our lifestyle and homewares section brings together tonal cushions, throws and faux botanicals to add texture and create a cohesive colour scheme or refresh any space. Our mission is for Sandrock House to be a leading interiors destination in Dorking and source of styling inspiration for our clients.

What one piece of advice would you give to fellow businesses?

Listen to your customers. Take a few risks here and there, believe in yourself and just go for it!

Who is your ideal client?

Our ideal client is someone openminded and seeking something unique for their home.

What do you do to unwind?

We both love immersing ourselves in the interior’s world, be it scouring Pinterest and Instagram for interiors inspiration or watching Grand Designs on TV. We love a bit of DIY, styling, re-styling, and redecorating our own homes. And let’s not forget the gin - we’ve bonded over a mutual appreciation of gin!

Philippa loves spending quality time with her husband and their three young boys and embarking on DIY projects at home. She’s currently planning a large-scale renovation of their new family home. Rebecca loves spending time with her husband and her two whippets. She loves to travel, particularly spending time in their second home in the south of France, always a major source of her inspiration.

What inspired you to launch your business together?

Well, there’s no doubt that we’re both mad about interior design. It lights a fire in us like nothing else and we love sourcing and styling our unique finds.

Both qualified interior designers, we first set up our own interior businesses independently. Then, as luck would have it, we both happened to be looking for business partners earlier this year. We recognised how our diverse but complimentary signature styles would be perfect for a joint venture on West Street.

Philippa: I initially started my Instagram account @sandrockhouse, to document the extensive renovations to our Victorian family home. Amazingly, this led me to winning the UK Interior Award 2019 for the ‘Best Use of Dark Decor’ and again in 2020 for ‘Best Eye for Interiors’ Sandrock House then went on to be featured in several top interior’s magazines including The Ideal Home, 25 Beautiful Homes and Surrey Life. My Instagram followers would often ask me for styling advice or where and how I sourced the unusual pieces in my own home. So, from there I was inspired to take an exciting leap of faith, starting my own concept store based on my signature dark, industrial style.

Rebecca: After spending 20 years globetrotting as airline cabin crew, my passion for the natural world, far-flung places, the people and treasures I encountered, inspired to me to set up my own interiors business; This Wild House. My style is an eclectic mix of Scandi, and tribal influences inspired by my global wanderings. I source my products from artisans in the UK and overseas and wherever possible work with suppliers who support or sponsor the individuals or local communities where these goods are made.

Philippa and I originally connected through Instagram and bonded over all thing’s interiors. So, when the opportunity arose to work together this year, it was a no-brainer to join forces and create our unique and exciting interiors store for Dorking.

It’s great to work alongside so many other unique independent businesses in Dorking. It’s hard to choose just one! West Street has long-been renowned as a go-to destination for antique shops. We also love The Malthouse for statement antique pieces and Lily & Leitrim for beautiful French-inspired furniture. We love popping into the Fabric shop next to Sandrock House to browse their extensive collection of fabrics for our interior projects.

We’re big fans of Two Many Cooks, The Dorking Butchery, Rustar, Westdaw Menswear, Victoria’s Bra Shop & The Mayflower Spa. To eat out, The Queen’s Head and Sorrel are our favourites. We are proud to be a part of the independent community in Dorking and are excited for the future of our town.
