Unique family days out in Surrey that won’t cost you the earth!

#

Winter is coming, the nights are drawing in, yet the children still need entertaining. Plus, it’s a bit too early for festive adventures and too late for Halloween. So, what can you do with the kids in November and throughout the winter months in Surrey?

We don’t believe in following the crowds and doing what everyone else is doing. We like unique and original, which is why we don’t want to tell you about all the family days out in Surrey that you already know. So, look no further, as we’ve done all the hard work for you and are pleased to outline below some of the best family days out in Surrey waiting for your family.

Family days out for the adventurous

If you and your family thrive on adventure, there’s no shortage of family days out in Surrey to suit you. The Skywalk Adventure in Esher is a thrilling treetop course for those aged eight and over. There are two courses, a zip line and enough adrenalin induced fun to last you for weeks!

Regardless of the weather, children (and you!) can enjoy ‘donutting’ at the Guildford Ski Slopes. What’s not to love about flying down a slope in an inflatable rubber ring? It’s generally available for those six and over and is open for private or public sessions during the weekend.

If thrill-seeking is your thing, then hit the brakes at the Daytona Racetrack at Sandown Park. It’s available for six-year-olds and over and beginners or pro racers! You can book parties there or pre-book for anyone in the family who’s brave enough.

For animal fans

Lingfield’s British Wildlife Centre features a vast collection of British wildlife from Polecats to Pine Martens. There are keeper talks scheduled throughout the day and see if you can spot a snake (in their enclosure!). Then, tread the boardwalk to visit the wetland nature reserve. It’s open all year round (apart from Christmas) and only during the weekdays in the school holidays.

For cycle lovers

The Trail Academy in the beautiful Surrey Hills hosts several mountain bike trails for budding cyclists. They offer skills coaching for children and groups for beginners or children who want to improve their skills. There are also various guided rides depending on experience.

For independent cyclists and those who want to spot a 4,000-year-old yew tree (rumoured to be the oldest in the UK), then it has to be the Yew Tree Way. The route starts in Oxted and is an eight-mile cycle route for all the family. Riders will need to be competent on the road as the route is on country lanes.

On (or in!) the water

Who says it’s too late in the year to enjoy the water? If you and your family would rather be on the water than in it, head to Aquasports near Redhill and take advantage of their fantastic lake and facilities. If you have your own equipment, such as paddleboards or kayaks, you can book a slot and pay a launch fee to get on the water.

If you fancy trying something different (don’t forget a wetsuit in winter!), how about family bonding over a wakeboarding session at Thorpe Lakes Watersports in Chertsey? Book in advance, and kids can learn wakeboarding on Saturday or Sunday mornings.

If quiet river cruising is more suited to your family, why not try a relaxing boat ride at Taggs Boatyard in Thames Ditton? Hire a boat for the day and cruise along the Thames at your own pace. You can hire boats by the hour or all day, and boats vary in size as they can seat five people, or there are 6, 7, ten or twelve seaters. Book in advance online.

For walkers

There are plenty of walks throughout the county that only last a few hours or cost you little or nothing. But we know that children don’t always get enthusiastic about walks, so pick those that might entice them to the Surrey countryside. Bourne Wood near Farnham has numerous walking trails and has been the landscape for many films, including Robin Hood, Captain America: The First Avenger, Snow White and The Golden Compass.

For younger children, the delights of Narnia are located around the woods at Banstead. See if they can spot the magical wardrobe, the mighty Aslan or the lamppost.

Treasure hunters and trail seekers

If your children are mini treasure hunters, Treasure Trails offer the perfect day out with over fifteen locations across Surrey on their treasure map. You can select the site online, buy the mission trail and then get exploring. The trails take you around the area on foot, last about one and a half hours, and there’s a chance to win treasure!

Gatton Park is hosting a section of tales and trails this November if you’ve got younger children and you’re at a loss for what to do with them. There are various dates and trails, including Goldilocks and the three bears and Julia Donaldson favourites.

To escape the weather

For somewhere your children can exert their energy on rainy days (or anytime), Skaterham in Caterham is a must. The converted chapel hosts indoor and outdoor skate ramps and your children can take scooters, rollerblades, and skateboards. Even better, there’s a café and viewing platform for adults, and they hold sessions throughout the week and weekend for different ages.

For something a little more educational, the Lightbox in Woking has a museum about the town’s history which is excellent for families. It includes interactive displays, a dressing-up box and films to educate about Woking’s development over the years.

You don’t have to stay home in the winter months, spend a fortune on entertaining your children or follow the crowds to the well-known Surrey spots. Instead, take advantage of the many free options and try something different where your family can enjoy some winter treats even if the sun isn’t shining.
